Inexpensive DIY Halloween Decorations

Halloween decor can get expensive, but you can have fun creating all sorts of unique characters to give your house some cool decor.

I love this witch made with a plastic milk bottle. Pour some green paint inside the bottle to coat it and then pour out the excess. You can use a glue gun to attach hair made from plastic trash bags. Add a witch hat you already have or find one at a dollar store. Hot glue the hat on top of the plastic hair. The eyes can be drawn on with a permanent marker. Or if you won't have rain, hot glue on some features cut from black paper. You can hang the witch from a tree or set her onto a stick in the ground or stuck in a hay bale. You could also make a witch's body with old black clothes that you stuff with leaves or other old clothes. The witch won't show up very well at night, so place her where there will be light on her.

This scary jack-o-lantern is super simple to make. Just put a green glow stick inside a plastic pumpkin that has openings for the eyes, mouth, and nose. It will look cool anywhere, but at The Charm of Home blog they hung some from the ceiling with thread. She said she got the pumpkins for $5 each at a dollar store. but you might be able to use plastic pumpkins you already have.

If you have some leftover textured clear vinyl that you put in windows for privacy, you can make a great ghost. Just cut the shape you want and put it up. Cut holes in it for the eyes and mouth of the ghost.  It clings to windows and mirrors and you can take it down after Halloween. Just roll it up to store for next year. I found this idea at Thrifty Decor Chick. You might be able to make a cool ghost in the window with plastic wrap, layering as needed. Getting this to show up at night could be tricky. Possibly backlighting a window could work.

Anyone can make a skeleton from paper plates! You can use string to attach the parts. What a fun family craft! I found this at Dollar Store Crafts. You could hang these just about anywhere. I have to laugh at the hands and feet, but hey, it's Halloween. Decorations don't have to be scientifically accurate!

Mummies! Yes, mummies!  They are great at Halloween and you can make some hilarious mummies using just gardening wire and old white cloth. The plastic-coated wire is flexible, so the mummy can be repositioned many times in whatever pose you like.  I love the ones illustrated at Family Chic where this easy tutorial can be found.  I have to say this is my favorite. It's just too much fun posing these little guys!
